Fit but Frugal: 4 Tips for How to Stay Fit in This Economy

Let’s be real… being a fitness girlie in this economy takes creativity, intention, and a little bit of hustle. But here’s the good news: you can prioritize your health and fitness goals without breaking the bank. Whether you’re saving for student loans, a family vacation, or just trying to survive inflation, staying fit doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. With a few smart strategies, you can feel strong, energized, and empowered—on any budget. Here are my four favorite tips for how to do just that!

#1: Meal Prepping Is Your Superpower

One of the easiest ways to save money and stay on track with your goals is through meal prepping. According to the USDA, the average household wastes up to 30% of the food it buys. Yikes. Planning your meals ahead not only cuts food waste but also prevents those last-minute takeout splurges. Focus on budget-friendly protein staples like eggs, canned tuna, ground turkey, and rotisserie chicken. Pair them with fiber-rich carbs like brown rice, sweet potatoes, and lentils. And don’t sleep on frozen veggies—they’re just as nutritious and last way longer!

#2: Home Workouts for the Win

Gym memberships are a luxury, not a requirement. Thanks to YouTube, fitness apps, and creators (like yours truly 💁‍♀️), you can work out anytime, anywhere. Bodyweight movements like squats, push-ups, planks, and burpees are completely free and still highly effective. The American College of Sports Medicine reports that high-intensity bodyweight training improves cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance. All without the need for fancy equipment! No gym? No problem. Whether you have a full setup or just a yoga mat and a water bottle, you can still train effectively. The Training with T App has tons of workouts that require little to no equipment, and now I’m also enabling you to be a pilates princess right from the comfort of your own home–and your first 7 days are on me!

#3: Walking Is Underrated (and Free!)

Never underestimate the power of a good walk. It’s free, it’s accessible, and it counts. A brisk 30-minute walk can burn around 150–200 calories, depending on your pace and bodyweight. But more than that, walking improves mental health, reduces cortisol levels, and gives you a much-needed break from the chaos of your day. Bonus points if you grab your dog, your kids, or call up your bestie and make it a social stroll.

#4: Mix-and-Match Your Fit Gear

Before you spend another $100 on a single pair of leggings—pause. Mix and match your existing sets to create fresh combos. Neutral tops pair well with bold leggings and vice versa. Check out resale apps like Poshmark or ThredUp, or keep an eye out for seasonal sales. Trust me, confidence comes from how you move, not the label on your workout top.

So yes, you can be financially smart and physically strong. The economy might be unpredictable, but your dedication to yourself? That’s something you can count on.
