Beyond the Basket: What to Do With Your Apples Now That You’ve Picked Them

We are heading into one of my FAVORITE times of the year—FALL! And with the season comes all the activities. Apple picking is one of those wholesome fall activities that just screams cozy vibes, crisp air, and seasonal fun. But after you’ve hauled home that giant basket, the big question always hits: what do you actually do with all those apples? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! As someone who loves turning fitness, food, and fun into a lifestyle, here are unique and creative ways to use every last apple from your orchard adventure.

Let’s start with the obvious: food. Apples are a nutritional powerhouse—packed with fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Research shows that eating apples regularly is linked to improved heart health and even better gut health thanks to their soluble fiber, pectin. Instead of just another pie, try slicing them up for homemade apple chips in the air fryer (hello, guilt-free snacking!). Or get adventurous with savory options like an apple-and-quinoa salad topped with goat cheese and walnuts, which balances sweet and tart flavors beautifully. For a post-workout recovery treat, blend apples with cinnamon and Greek yogurt into a protein-packed smoothie. Chef’s kiss!

BUT… that being said, not every apple has to end up in your stomach. Apples can make adorable DIY projects, especially if you’re looking for a cozy fall vibe at home. One of my favorites is apple stamping—slice an apple in half, dip it in paint, and stamp it onto brown kraft paper for custom gift wrap or even framed art. If you’ve got little ones, this doubles as a fun craft activity that keeps them engaged while sneaking in some seasonal creativity.

If you’re like me, you love decorating for the season, and apples can play a starring role. A bowl of bright red or green apples instantly elevates a fall tablescape, but you can take it further by hollowing them out to create apple candle holders. Yes, it’s a little extra, but all you have to do is carve a small space for a tealight and you’ve got an affordable, natural centerpiece that smells as good as it looks!

Another underrated option? Turn those apples into a simmer pot! Slice up apples and add them to a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a dash of vanilla. Let it simmer on the stove and your whole house will smell like a cozy fall day. It’s a natural alternative to candles or artificial sprays, and studies show that pleasant scents can boost mood, reduce stress, and even enhance productivity.

I’ve been saving one of my favorite ideas for last (well, almost). Did you know that in the U.S., nearly 30-40% of food is wasted every year? If you’ve picked more apples than you can eat, consider donating them to a local food pantry or shelter. Many organizations will gladly accept fresh produce, and it’s a meaningful way to share your abundance with others. You can also bag them up with a little ribbon and gift them to neighbors, teachers, or friends as a thoughtful seasonal gesture.

And lastly, you know I can’t skip the fitness angle! Apples are an ideal pre- or post-workout snack. The natural sugars give you quick energy, while the fiber slows digestion so you don’t crash. Pairing an apple with almond butter creates a perfect carb-protein combo to fuel your workouts or aid recovery. And let’s be real—it feels pretty rad to fuel your body with something you picked yourself!

From food to fitness, crafts to community, apples are one of the most versatile fall treasures. The next time you’re wondering what to do with your orchard haul, think beyond the pie crust. Whether you’re eating, creating, decorating, or donating, you’ll be savoring the season in more ways than one.
