7 Benefits of Combining Pilates With Strength Training in Your Workout Routine

Apr 25, 2024

Lift Heavy, Flow Steady:

Welcome back to my corner of the internet where we're all about unlocking our strongest, healthiest selves. Today, I'm thrilled to dive into a topic that's close to my heart and core (pun intended): the dynamic duo of Pilates and strength training. Most of you know I’ve always been a strength training girlie, but the dancer in me loves the slow and controlled movements of pilates. Pilates recruits your slow twitch muscles fibers while building core strength and improved posture, while strength training does the obvious - helps you build muscles and get stronger! But the benefits of each workout doesn’t stop there, and believe it or not they have a lot more in common than you might think!

Let’s dive into the benefits of combining these two powerhouse workouts to learn how they truly compliment each other and can take your fitness journey to the next level. Whether you're a seasoned fitness enthusiast or just dipping your toes into the world of wellness, all of these benefits can be applied and are great for everyone!

  1. Enhanced Core Strength: Let's kick things off with the core of the matter – literally! Pilates is renowned for its focus on core strength and stability, while strength training targets muscle groups throughout the body. By integrating both, you'll develop a rock-solid core that does more than look fabulous – it will actually improve your overall posture and balance.
  2. Increased Flexibility: Pilates isn't just about building strength; it's also fantastic for enhancing flexibility and mobility. Pairing it with strength training ensures that your muscles stay limber and ready to tackle any challenge, whether you're mastering a new yoga pose or dominating your next weightlifting session. The more you are able to move your body, correctly and safely, the better off you'll be.
  3. Balanced Muscle Development: Strength training can often emphasize certain muscle groups, leading to potential imbalances if not approached mindfully. Incorporating Pilates into your routine helps promote a more holistic approach to muscle development, ensuring that you achieve a balanced physique while reducing the risk of injury.
  4. Mind-Body Connection: One of the most beautiful aspects of Pilates is its emphasis on the mind-body connection. By combining it with strength training, you'll deepen your awareness of how your body moves and functions, fostering a greater sense of control and mindfulness both inside and outside the gym.
  5. Injury Prevention: Building a resilient body is key to long-term fitness success, and that's where the fusion of Pilates and strength training truly shines. Pilates focuses on strengthening the stabilizing muscles that support your joints, while strength training fortifies your major muscle groups. Together, they form a formidable defense against common injuries, allowing you to push your limits without fear.
  6. Metabolic Boost: Strength training is renowned for its ability to rev up your metabolism, torching calories both during and after your workout. When paired with the controlled movements of Pilates, you'll create a metabolic furnace that keeps burning long after you've rolled up your mat, helping you achieve your weight loss and body composition goals more efficiently.
  7. Versatility and Adaptability: One of the best things about combining Pilates and strength training is the endless variety it offers. Whether you prefer bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, or free weights, there's a fusion routine that's perfect for you. Plus, you can easily tailor the intensity to suit your fitness level, making it accessible for everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes.

As with any fitness regimen, consistency is key to reaping the full rewards. So, why not mix things up and give the Pilates-strength training combo a try? Your body – and your future self – will thank you for it! Remember, fitness is a journey, not a destination so enjoy every step of the way, whether that’s with pilates, strength training, or both!
